My Herbivore Ritual

Is there anything better than dining at Herbivore in the Mission and then heading over to Ritual Roasters for coffee and dessert? Um, no. No there isn't.

When I went on Friday I decided to try something I've never had before, so you're looking at the coconut curry udon noodles. It was good, but I think I'll be sticking with my go-to large salad with grilled veggies on my next visit. Still, it was tasty, and you get a huge portion for a paltry $8.50.

The coffee at Herbivore is always cold and nasty (seriously, I've tried many times and it always sucks - what gives Herbivore?) but when Ritual is a few steps away who the hell cares. You will get the best cuppa joe in town plus the yummy addition of vegan pastries. Our recent chilly weather had me in a fall mood so I went for the sweet potato bread. I'm pretty sure this was the first time in my life I've ever had my beloved sweet potato in bread form and it won't be my last. Delicious, and just the right amount of sweetness with my rich decaf.

Not a bad way to kick off a weekend, eh? Hope you had a good one!

I love Herbivore! I live up in Sacramento now, but still head down to either SF or Berkeley just to eat there (well sometimes there, sometimes Cha-Ya and sometimes lunch at one at dinner at the other!). I laughed at your comment about Herbivore's coffee though! I feel the same way. My g/f and I have to remind ourselves NOT to order coffee when we go.

Our Bay Area trips often follow this pattern - food at Herbivore (and/or Cha-Ya), dessert at Maggie Mudd's and coffee at Muddy's (my favorite soy latte).

I recently found your blog and hope to keep up with it! We are two more vegan foodies.

Been to herbivore twice and cant imagine ever returning. They seemed to go out of their way to make sure they fulfilled all the horrible cliches of what people think vegan food is; bland and mushy and served by someone who introduces themselves as a yogini.
Speaking of mushy, those noodles you posted sure look overcooked and limp. Usually your taste is exceptional so i will allow this slip :)

Anonymous - Is Herbivore the best vegan food in SF? Not by far. However, they do have a few things I really love and at very reasonable prices. If you haven't been in a while, I would recommend another try as I think they've upped both their service and cooking skills over the last year.

And yeah, those noodles were not the best... but I said that on the blog.
